Chapter Two. The Wedding Ceremony. 1.

The square in front of the Seven St. [read: Saint] Mice Cathedral, in which the wedding ceremony was to take place, was crowded with the common mouse folk. (32) It seemed as though all of Mouseville had come to take a look at the newlyweds.

At last, the bride appeared in her white wedding dress.

Woman from the crowd: Oh, look! The bride! Here comes the bride! Isn’t she beautiful!

Another woman: And who is that at her side? Would that be the marquis? (33)

Her husband: The marquis is much younger. No, that must be her father, the Baron Roquefort. They say he is one of the richest mice in the kingdom!

Another man: No wonder the marquis was so eager to marry his daughter.

Their conversation was interrupted by loud cries. The mouse folk was greeting their King.

The crowd: Long live the King! Long live the Queen! Long live the Cardinal!

Two minutes later, the cathedral clock struck six.
