Special attention is paid to formation and development of the architectural type of the Great Ottoman mosque, which has become sort of an identification card of the whole Ottoman culture. The authors analyze the place of Sinan’s architectural workshop in the history of the Ottoman and Moslem cult architecture as a whole, how the Ottoman architecture of the 18th – 19th centuries adapted European samples, what the searches of national style looked like in the building practice of the last decades of the Ottoman Empire. Many of the monuments considered are attracted to the investigation of the history of the Ottoman cult architecture for the first time.
